Download a video from a post
Copy the link to the post itself, the one that ends in /status/ and a long number. A link to a profile or to a search will not work, because there is no single video behind it.
X usually stores several sizes of the same video. The largest is the closest to what the poster uploaded; the smaller ones are the versions the app plays on a weak connection.
Download a GIF from a post
What X calls a GIF is not a GIF file. It is a short silent MP4 that loops, which is why it is sharp and small at the same time.
You get that MP4. Any player will loop it; converting it back to a real GIF would make it both bigger and worse.

What will not work
- Protected accounts, where posts are only visible to approved followers.
- Posts behind the sensitive-content gate, which X only opens for a signed-in account.
- Deleted posts and posts from suspended accounts.
- Live Spaces audio, which is not a post video.
