Download a YouTube video as MP4
Up to 1080p, YouTube serves one file that already contains both picture and sound, so the download starts almost immediately.
Above 1080p the picture and the sound are stored as two separate streams. They have to be joined back together after both have been fetched, which is why a 1440p or 2160p file takes longer to appear than a 720p one of the same length.
Download YouTube Shorts
A Short is an ordinary vertical video with a different player around it. Paste the /shorts/ link exactly as you copied it and you get the same MP4 you would get from a normal watch page.
Nothing is stamped onto the picture. If the creator burned text or a logo into the frame, that stays, because it is part of the video itself.
Save the audio as MP3
The audio-only stream is taken on its own and converted to MP3, so you never download the picture you are going to throw away.
Quality is capped by the source. YouTube ships audio at roughly 128 kbps for most uploads, and an MP3 made from it cannot contain detail the source never had.

What will not work
- Private videos, and videos limited to channel members.
- Age-restricted videos, which YouTube only serves to a signed-in account.
- Live streams while they are still running. Wait for the replay to be published.
- Some official music videos are blocked in some countries, and the block follows the server, not you.
